Porque... importa para saber porqué los productos de la tierra eran tan distintos. Había que sembrar las cosas en el jardín, había que sembrar era en un zarzo de… de palos de madera... un montón de palos, se hacían de palos. Una... como una mesa, como una vasija para sembrar matas. Pero en una vasija grande. Entonces, se hechaba tierra ahí en ese zarzo, se hechaba tierra... zarzo se llama… como se dice… se hecha tierra, se siembran las matas ahí en ese... La tierra es tan fecunda que da, increíblemente, da fruto... Que es increíblemente inesperado... es decir una cosa, una cosa sin... que no lo se imagina. Ni imaginable, si. Una cosa inimaginable de cómo le da la tierra. Yo le hacía semilleros de pasto a mi esposo. Hacía semilleros... de con semillas de pasto nuevas traídas de… importadas o traídas de distintas partes. Em... Le hacía semilleros para sembrar… para ahí hacer los potreros. Entonces, cuando hacía un… el jardinero, el hombre, le hacía un zarzo y entonces sembraba claveles o sembraba matas muchísimas. ¡Tenía una colección de orquídeas! Alcancé a tener creo que trescientas orquídeas. No las pude traer, y todo el mundo me decía que, “¡Porqué no las trajo! ¿Porqué no las trajo?” “¡No! porque no las podía traer. El transporte era dos días a caballo y eso no iba nada a sobrevivir. Las matas que yo trajera para allá.” Pero sí, las gocé mucho y seleccionándolas porque yo iba todos los días a la selva, allá adentro me metía a la selva a traer cualquier orquídea que yo veía colgada de los árboles o prendida en los árboles, yo arrancaba para llevar para la casa. Cualquiera nueva que yo descubría. Entonces... em... ¿Qué más, qué más?

It is important to understand why the products from this soil were so different. We  had to plant things in the garden, and in a raised plant bed made of wooden beams. We added rich soil to these beds, and that is where we grew our plants.  The earth is so fertile there that it produced fruit which was incredible and  completely unexpected!

You canʼt even imagine how much this soil produced! I made grass seedbeds for my husband, from imported seeds from many different places. I made seedbeds so we could make fields, and the gardener planted carnations and many, many other plants. I had a collection of orchids! I managed to develop a great range of orchids and I believe I had around three hundred in my collection! I could not bring them with me though… Everyone asked me, “Why didnʼt you bring them? Why didnʼt you bring them?” And I would say, “No! I couldnʼt bring them. The road was two days on horse and they would not have survived.” But yes, it was a great pleasure to choose them because every day I would go into the jungle, deep into the jungle and bring whichever orchids I saw hanging or growing from the trees, and I picked them and brought them to the house to transplant them any time I encountered a new species... What more?
